About

The Cultural Association 8 Bit Inside (www.8bitinside.com) is a non-profit organization that deals with Retrocomputing,

It was established on February 26, 2016 by a group of engineers and enthusiasts of electronics, information technology and telecommunications.

The purpose of the Association is to recover and keep working old PCs, old game consoles, peripherals and devices for computer music, with the ultimate aim of creating a Museum, dedicated to those who want to deepen and experience directly how information technology has evolved over time and telecommunications.

To date, the Association has a collection of about 1500 pieces that cover a period of time ranging from the end of the 70s to the present day and continues to receive donations from companies that decommission and dispose of their machinery, from individuals who donate the computer or console that they have kept and by collectors who adhere to the Association. The recovery activity is performed by the Association's volunteers. The recovered devices are cataloged and photographed, inserted in our Database which can be consulted through the website of the M I C R O Museum (Interactive Computer Museum of Rome) and, when possible, restored and made perfectly functional either by replacing any compromised HW parts or by restoring the original SW. .

On this site we have collected the results of years of research, information, images, documents, manuals with the aim of making them accessible to all enthusiasts.

Although "8 Bit Inside" refers to 8-bit technology, we don't just focus on 8-bit devices, but on every machine from the era before Intel x86 architecture became the de facto standard. Furthermore, our attention goes to all devices that have a technological interest for whatever reason: the first of its kind (eg the Apple Newton), a particular design (eg the Olivetti Quaderno) or other.
